Coinbase plans to start converting GYEN held on its exchange into USDC on October 26. The conversion is part of the issuer’s wind-down of the yen-linked stablecoin. Coinbase says the process will continue through October 30, while GYEN deposits and withdrawals will be disabled from October 26.
The move affects GYEN remaining on Coinbase. The exchange says balances will be converted at the market rate at the time of conversion, without transaction fees. Customers who do not want Coinbase to convert their tokens were instructed to transfer them to a compatible self-custody wallet before Oct. 26. Coinbase warns that deposits sent to GYEN addresses after support ends may not be recoverable.
Why GYEN is being phased out
Our educational guide explains how stablecoins work and what can go wrong with their pegs. GYEN’s wind-down is a specific issuer decision, not evidence that every stablecoin faces the same outcome.
GYEN issuer GMO-Z.com Trust Company announced the wind-down of GYEN and its U.S. dollar-pegged stablecoin ZUSD on May 15. Its published fee schedule says new purchases have been disabled, while eligible account holders can redeem tokens during the initial redemption period, which ends Nov. 11, 2026.
GMO Trust says direct redemption is at par value: one GYEN for one Japanese yen and one ZUSD for one U.S. dollar, subject to the issuer’s account and redemption requirements. That is different from a secondary-market trade, where liquidity, spreads and market prices can affect the amount a holder receives.
Coinbase’s notice is available in its official exchange status feed and its token migration guidance. Readers can also monitor @CoinbaseSupport on X for customer-service updates. BlockBriefing could not independently verify a specific X thread about this conversion, so no thread is quoted here.
Options for customers who still hold GYEN
- On Coinbase: GYEN sends and receives are scheduled to be disabled Oct. 26. Remaining platform balances are scheduled for conversion to USDC from Oct. 26 through Oct. 30.
- Outside Coinbase: The exchange’s conversion does not automatically apply to tokens held in a self-custody wallet or on another platform. Holders should check the relevant provider’s instructions.
- Direct redemption: GMO Trust’s published terms describe a redemption route for eligible account holders during the initial redemption period, ending Nov. 11.
- Tax and transfer risks: Coinbase warns that tax consequences may apply. Sending tokens to an unsupported address or network can result in loss of access.
Technical angle: a peg is not the same as an exit guarantee
GYEN is designed to track the Japanese yen, but a stablecoin’s target value does not guarantee that every exchange or trading pool will offer immediate liquidity at that price. During a wind-down, the practical exit route matters: direct issuer redemption, an exchange conversion and a secondary-market sale are different processes, with different eligibility rules, execution prices and settlement risks.
Coinbase says its conversion will use the market rate at the time it is processed. That means the amount of USDC received may reflect the conversion rate applied during the window rather than a guaranteed one-for-one conversion between GYEN and USDC. The issuer’s stated one-GYEN-to-one-yen redemption terms are a separate mechanism and should not be confused with the exchange’s USDC conversion.
No BTC, ETH or other broad-market price move is implied by this operational notice. Because this report concerns a token wind-down and account handling rather than a directional market setup, a TradingView price chart would not add evidence to the central claim.
What happens next
The next key dates are Oct. 26, when Coinbase says GYEN transfers will be disabled and its conversion window will begin, Oct. 30, when the exchange’s stated conversion window ends, and Nov. 11, when GMO Trust’s initial redemption period is scheduled to close. Holders should verify their balance location and follow the latest instructions from the platform or issuer that actually holds their tokens.
