Ethereum charges gas fees when users send transactions or interact with smart contracts. The price depends on the network’s demand and the work the transaction requires. A token swap often costs more than a simple ETH transfer. Ethereum’s official gas documentation explains the calculation and fee components. What are Ethereum gas fees?

Gas measures the computational work required to perform an operation on Ethereum. A transaction fee compensates the network for processing that work. Sending ETH, interacting with a smart contract and swapping tokens can require different amounts of gas because the operations involve different steps.

How the fee is calculated

On Ethereum’s fee market, the total fee is based on gas used multiplied by the effective price per unit of gas. The fee can include a base fee and a priority fee, expressed in gwei, a small denomination of ETH. The base fee changes with network demand, while the priority fee can influence how quickly a transaction is included. Wallets usually estimate the fee before you confirm.

Why Ethereum gas fees change

Fees often rise when many users compete for block space. Popular token launches, NFT activity, liquidations or busy DeFi applications can increase demand. Fees can fall when activity eases. The complexity of the transaction also matters, so two transactions made at the same time may have different costs.

Mainnet versus layer-2 networks

Ethereum layer-2 networks process transactions using systems designed to reduce costs or increase throughput while relying on Ethereum in different ways for security and settlement. Their fees, supported assets, bridges and withdrawal processes differ. Before sending funds, confirm that the wallet, destination address and token are on the intended network.

Check the fee before approving a transaction

Review the network and estimated fee before signing. Avoid repeatedly resubmitting a transaction without understanding its status. Keep enough of the network’s native asset to pay fees, and use official wallet or network documentation to understand pending transactions. Never trust unsolicited messages promising to refund gas or asking for your recovery phrase.

Frequently asked questions

Are gas fees paid to the wallet app?

Usually the fee is paid through the network transaction mechanism; a wallet interface helps estimate and submit it. Some services may add separate charges.

Can I pay Ethereum gas with any token?

On Ethereum mainnet, gas is generally paid in ETH. Other networks may have different fee assets and rules.
